Dairy Crossover: Cattle Handling Considerations That Beef Guys Miss

If you treat a Holstein-cross exactly like an Angus, you’re going to run into efficiency bottlenecks—and potential safety risks.

Dairy cattle, and their crosses, have different skeletal structures, temperaments, and “flight zones” than traditional beef breeds. Here are the three critical handling considerations that beef producers often miss when crossing over.


1. Bone Structure and “Hip Lock”

Dairy-influenced cattle tend to be “rangier” with more prominent hip bones and narrower frames than the blocky, muscular build of a Hereford or Angus. In an older friction-lock chute, these sharper angles can lead to “hip lock,” where the animal gets stuck or the chute fails to find a secure bypass on the bone.

  • The Fix: You need a Parallel Squeeze. If you try to “pressure” a dairy-cross like a wild range cow, they often just “shut down” and refuse to budge.
